4x4 issues

I've been reading everything I can find about 4x4 not engaging. I have a 2004 F150. Last winter it just stopped working.

I changed the IWE solenoid as it seemed like a logical and inexpensive place to start. Didn't help

When I'm parked and running I switch to 4x4 Hi and I hear a faint click. I'm not sure how loud the transfer case motor should be when it engages?

I jacked the front of the truck up and put in it and out of 4x4 and my wheels spin freely either way.

Can someone direct me to my next step?

I should also say that both 4x4 Hi and Low lights will come on.

first thing that happens is the transfer case locks in and engages the front driveshaft. Put the truck in 4 x 4 and then shut the motor off. Jack one front tire an inch off the ground and see if you can turn the front drive shaft. If so, the transfer case did not engage. If the driveshaft is locked in, then rotate the front tire. If it does not rotate, the axle is not locked in. ............ motor has to be running and vacuum present to get the front axle OUT of 4 x 4.

Ok, shaft locks in but I can rotate the tire. It did lock for a second then it freed up again.

I'm thinking the IWE actuators?

yes, IWE is bad.... problem is they should LOCK when the motor is off and no vacuum.. You need to start the truck and put it in 2 x 4 to get it to disengage !! Your in the right area !
