4x4 doesn't work all the time.

I have a 02' f350 sd diesel drw cc.The 4x4 doesn't always work. The front axle does engage every time .The 4x4 light comes on,the four wheel drive works then after driving a little bit it will sometimes quit working. The 4x4 light is still on,the front axle still is engaged but the transfer case stops turning. It will also stop in 4x4 low.I think the clutches in the transfer case are bad. What do you think?

Is it manual or ESOF?

How do you know the xfer case isn't engaged? Did it actually not engage the front driveline?

What do you mean "It will also stop in 4x4 low"? Does it lockdown?

If it is ESOF, and the light is still on, your servo motor may be bad, or loose.

Ain't no clutches in these transfer cases... that's only for full-time 4wd.

Well i know cause if i spin in snow and the rear wheels are going like 40mph and the front driveshaft doesnt turn.It has the esof.I tried it with the front hubs manualy locked also.I have it in low range 4x4 and only the rear wheels turn when spinning.

Are you sure cause the shop manual says there is. i also talked to a tech at the dealership and he thought there was clutches.I would love for it to be the motor but i doubt it.Its like i have 4x4 then i dont and nothing else changes except the front ds doesnt turn. The light stays on in 4x4 and low range.

Look at your servo motor again, make sure it's fastened tightly to the xfer case. If it is then maybe the adapter inside has slipped of its mating surface.

These xfer cases are chain driven. Do you hear the chain dragging? Any noise at all?

No i dont hear noise.Wouldnt the light go out if the transfer came out of 4x4?I can have 4x2 low range(the lights still read 4x4x).That isnt possible with the motor going bad is it?There is some sort of clutch set up in there. Can someone please check the service manual.?

No, there are no clutches.

Yes, it's possible for your servo motor to run and not activate the shaft. Not common, but possible. It's also possible that the housing is busted and allowing the shaft to back out of the mating surface. You can't see that part unless you remove the motor, which is not hard to do.

I can't recall things like I once did, but the xfer case you have should be an NP273...chain drive.

You are correct, NP273. Trying to find proof I can post that it is a chain drive, but I know that it is.

http://tbtrans.com/transfer_case.htm

This site has a parts diagram and parts list for the NP273... this is what your truck has, it is clearly a chain drive T-case, no clutches.

The Super Duty trucks always have and still use the NP273 for ESOF, NP271 for manual 4X4. The T-cases are identical, excepting the electronic 4X4 solenoid on the 273.

Did you have time to remove that servo motor, bigdawg?

Once it's off, you can manually shift the xfer case into gear and check it that way. Just make sure you index it back before re-installing the motor.

BTW - some manuals have New Venture, some have New Process - same thing.

I took it off and nothing was loose.I have a friend that has a parts store so i got one from him to try. When its in 4x4 now it doesnt seem to come out (although there has not been enough time to be sure),but now some times you have to turn the **** twicw for it to go in.The 4x4 light comes on right away but some times its not locked it right away and you have to turn the **** from 4x2 to 4x4 again.I thought i read somewhere else that someone's sotf 4x4 didnt always engage the first time.

Not quite. The other difference is the NV273 case does not have a neutral position.
