I new to the forum and was just what is everybody running the mud boggers because I'm in the process of building my own for the local mud bog group. what would be solid engine to run. The guys around here are running 429, 454, 440 so would 460 be the right place to start. I have a 79 Ford f150 4x4 thanks for ne help

I'd like to build a 7.3 PSD mud monster. Since most mud monsters weigh a million tons already and gather more weight as the mud piles on I'm not worried about weight. And the straight pipe sounds and the gobs of torque could make for a nice combination. Plus no distributor to worry about getting wet!

I have a ford 400 V8 but if you are starting from scratch 460 would be the way to go. There are way more aftermarket parts for them too.

if i was doing it, just go ahead and get a junkyard 460 and stroke it when you rebuild it (arp, and good bearing/gaskets!)

i'm kicking myself for not turning my 360 into a 446

Every so often you see a nice FE in a mudbogger but its usually a 460. I have both, and love them both. The 460s are easier to find, have more aftermarket support, and imo can ultimatly provide greater torque/hp. Its pretty easy to build a 460 into a massive mud dominator. Mines actually at 514ci and does fine in thick mud with boggers.

yeah don't get an fe

they have theI can't speak civillywas that factor but they're pretty expensive to build and the valve train has weak points... (1000 bucks for roller rockers!) but other than that they cost a little more than a 460 to build but the 460's can get alittle more power... okay maybe more than alittle

If I had to start from scratch it would be a 460, though if it had a 302 I would go with a 351w instead. If you are lucky, sometimes you can find vans cheap that have 460s in them.

In my 84 I am running the 300 six backed by a 4 speed. My 77 I am running a healthy 351M backed by a 4 speed, I have not had a chance to take her out to play yet. But I have run the hell out of my 84 in the mud, that ol six does a great job, I have yet to bog er down. I would not trade it for a 302 however, the six has more torque. My advice: 300, 351, any FE motor, 351C or M, 400, 460 all have my vote. A 460 will run nice.
