Auto trans, or manual on the column as in "three on the tree"?
First, lubrication is your friend... it's the least means.
Second, check for wear, worn, or misaligned parts. Chock the wheels, set the brake, and have a helper cycle through the actions.
Third.... the party is on with a shift column/linkage rebuild.
