Hello,
I'm relatively new to the forum, hadn't posted much but have done allot of reading on here in regards to the Excursions and F-250s. I have been looking into an Excursion to use as a weekend tow vehicle. I will be towing a camper for the most part and an enclosed single car trailer on occasion. From what I have read, the 6.8L would be my best bet since I will not be driving it that often. I have a 2002 Limited 4x4 in consideration. Has had 4 owners, a good portion of its life was as a fleet rental vehicle. I looked it over test drove it, all the electronics work, 4x4 works seems to be mechanically sound. The body and interior are in good condition, just in need of a good cleaning. Has new injectors and fuel rails, only thing I could find needing attention is an oil leak on the drivers side forward portion of the engine block. I'm assuming it is the oil cooler seal. My main concern is that the engine/drivetrain have 259K miles on them. The asking price for the vehicle is $5,500 cash could probably get it lower. I would like some input from those that own them as to if this would be worth while for what I'm intending to use it for and the pros/cons I would be looking at for buying a high mileage excursion for the lower price with the potential costs of engine/trans rebuild vs a lower 100k mile one at a fairly higher price?
Thanks, look forward to becoming a member of the community.
If it was well maintained and drives good, I wouldn't be afraid of 259k. I have more than that on my 5.4 SD and it was poorly maintained by the previous owner. I haul and tow with it regularly.
WELCOME to the world of XXXs.
Any way you cut it 250+ is a lot of miles & these trucks take a few grand to set up for your intended use. I'd pass personally. The last X I bought for $5500 with 95K on the clock. 3K later I have a great truck with 98000 on her. PLEASE add your general location to the profile page. Helps everyone, & you will get better info.
I'm not sure what ex's go for in your location but I paid $3,300 for an '02 6.8 limited with 203k. It didn't need anything major right away but the transmission went just a month or so after I bought. I've since invested in a redhead steering box and some other minor things to get it up to my liking. I think $5,500 with 259k is a bit too steep. With any truck of that mileage except for maybe a diesel, be prepared for something major to go and assume it may need $2,000 or so of work. Also, if your trailer is heavy you might want to regear. Or look for a truck that came with the 4.30 gears from the factory.

They sell for a little more here in the South (the X I mentioned was in Ohio). But I'm in total agreement, even w/o any salt issues seems very high with those miles. The OP would be much better off in the 8-9K range with way less miles. 8-9 K will buy one heck of a nice X.
I'd buy it for parts, but I doubt anything on that truck is in better shape than the parts on my truck so I'd pass too I sold my 5.4 for less than that and it was MINT!
Thanks for the feedback so far. I tracked down a 2000 V10 4x4 that surfaced on a used car lot this weekend. Didn't get to test drive it, just look. It has 155K for miles with a price of $9,950. Is that more reasonable for age vs miles and condition?

When I said 8-9 I was referring to a newer/ less miles than that. For 10 K you should be looking at an 04/ 05 Limited with 100 to 125,000 miles it at most. I can show you a great 2000 X for under 6K.

Yup. That's too much for a 2000 v10. I've seen diesels of that age go for less. Keep looking, you'll find something. Don't expect to find one in a day. I looked for at least a month before I settled on mine and granted, it wasn't mint, but I use it for work so it didn't need to be. It's more important to be as rust free as possible and as mechanically sound as possible. You could always do new leather and carpet inside to clean it up if you have too. There's plenty of excursion with a good bit of rust. Make sure you take a good look underneath. Pay good attention to the areas below the rear (side) door openings and the cargo floor in back above the hitch.
We got our 2002 6.8L 2wd Limited 103K last May for $10k. Couple of small dinks in the bumpers and a scrape on the right side. The driver's seat had fresh leather & the E Pirellis still have few miles on them. Was garaged most of the time. Everything else was original and working fine. Now we have 108k and blew #3 spark plug. Was just getting ready to change them out. The plugs look original. Timesert went well.
