Hello everyone. This is my first post so be gentle.
My neighbor is selling his 2001 Ford Excursion. It has 47,000 miles on it and is in super good shape, I would rate it in around 95% for the body and interior. He is asking $8000.00 for it but I think that he would take $7000.00 for it. It has all leather on the inside and looks to be a V8 but don't know for sure, I know it is not a diesel. He is selling it because he has recently retired and bought a brand new F-350 truck. He did not trade it in because the dealership told him that there was no market for them and would only give him $3000.00 trade on it.
If purchased this will not be a daily driver for me. I will use my 1991 F-150 for that. It is really going to be for road trips, big shopping trips and to pull my camper.
We really dont need another big SUV since my wife has a GMC Yukon. Her car is nice but I would like big SUV of my own if you know what I mean.
First off is that a decent price for it or should I run away? If it has a V8 in it do you think that it will pull my 31' camper without any problems? I'm sure it would since out Yukon will pull it but is has the Vortec 8100 in it. Is there anything that I should look for on/in the vehicle that might be problematic? The Excursion looks to be longer then our Yukon is that correct? Since this model is not made any longer are parts hard to get for it?
From reading the posts so far everyone seems to like them.
Any other suggestions or help would be appreciated.
I would go to kbb.com or nadaguides.com to get an accurate value. I have a 2000 and wouldn't trade it for the world (except for maybe a newer one). They are longer, taller and wider than Yukons by 7" in each direction I beleive. My personal opinion is, don't go with the V8. I have a V10 but I don't tow anything. If you have the 8.1 in your Yukon, I think you'll be severely disappointed with the V8. My Excursion weighs 7400 lbs empty. With a trailer behind that, that's a lot weight for a V8. Again, I have no expereince with a V8 Excursion.
Parts availabilty hasn't been a problem for me. There are planty of parts for them since they are basically a Super Duty with a different body.
Definitely a good price, especially if you can snag it for 7K. The mileage is low which, if it were maintained regularly, would make the deal even better.
The point 93F250 made about not being suitable for towing is probably good advice (I don't tow so have no opinion on that)

I quite agree.
Let us know how it turns out, and don't forget to post some pictures.
The neighbor is on vacation and wont be back in town until lat next week. When he gets back I will be able to drive it. Will report back after I drive it.
Also if it is a V10 would that make it more desireable? I would hope it should be able to pull the camper with that engine it. One the size of the Excursion would it have more ground clearance on it then the wifes Yukon?
You never said if it was a 4x4 or 4x2. In 2001 a 5.4 V8 was standard in a 4x2. The 6.8 V10 was standard in a 4x4. The price is a really good one for the miles. If it is a V10 you will have plenty enough power towing. I am not so sure with the V8 unless it was a diesel. At the top of the FTE site under "Articles/Specs" and in "Specifications" you will find what is standard for that year. Good Luck.
It is a 4x4. I know that it is not a diesel and from reading from the specifications that you pointed me to is would say that its going to be a V10 then.
Your Yukon with a 8.1L engine is a tow beast. The only problem being your short wheelbase. You have a long Travel Trailer (TT). A Yukon hitched up to a long TT like yours usually result in a lot of sway. The Excursion (IF IT IS A V-10) will make towing easier. A 3/4 ton truck platform is much sturdier. You will see a big difference with the long wheelbase. But DO NOT but a V-8 Excursion to tow...

If he has an 8.1, he has a 3/4 ton Yukon XL which is the same length as a Suburban.
Since you mentioned it has a V10 and low miles, I say go for it. It sounds like a creampuff that will serve you well.
The X has plenty of room for mods and upgrades to make it the best tow vehicle you will ever own.
X_Hemi_Guy is the guy to talk to if you're towing with a V10 X. He knows the in's and out's of towing with the V10. Here's one of his informative posts:
I have a v10 with the 3.73 4x4. Only 34K when I tried to tow my 12000 lb TT (36ft). My 07 Tundra will drag it all day long 80-85mph. One particular hill, going to Gettysburg, PA the Tundra will take it 65 in 5th gear and lots of open pedal left for me to push to. The X was 35mph in 2nd gear, floored!!! Was I mad. I expected the V10 to be killer for towing. Hate to be wrong, I guess that is why it rarely happens.
Mine was a cream puff that was traded at my dealership in July 08 - when gas was expensive and I bought for $8300, plus exteded 100k b2b warranty. Dont get me wrong, I love it!!! But, it is not all that great for towing, when compared to other vehicles out there.
