I am on the hunt for a good used Ex and have some questions. My initial use will simply be as a daily driver/family hauler, but the ultimate goal is to use it to tow my 1996 Ford Thunderbird to/from the dragstrips and eventually purchase a travel trailer. Due to current budget I am focusing my hunt on V10 2WD Ex's with ~100k miles on them.
Here is one that I have found relatively local to me:
According to KBB they are nearly $3k high, but it seems these are bringing premium prices right now. I checked the VIN decoder and this one is a 3.73 (not sure if it is open or LS), VIN is 1FMNU42S5YED60231 if someone has a better way to look up. In each person's opinion will this truck suffice for my needs, and what is a fair price to offer if it checks out?
I already spoke with a salesman that ran the carfax and he says it is two owner, 1 form Houston, TX and 1 from Franklin, NC. They bought the truck from a local wholesaler who inevitably got it as a trade in from a local dealership.
I prefer to find the for sale by owner low mileage cream puffs, but not sure that is going to happen with one of these.
Clean low mileage EXs are getting harder to find every day, so that will affect the price as will local demand and of course rust free EXamples will always demand a higher price. The final question of cost vs value to YOU is entirely up to you and your desires and budget. With that being said, that green EX looks pretty good from the pictures in the ad, clean inside and out.
A V-10 EX with 3.73 gears will be fine with flatland towing under 8k lbs. Especially if that T-Bird is on an open trailer as then there will be much less wind drag at speed, enclosed trailers and TTs add significant drag and load to the towing equation. Deeper gears (4.30 or 4.56) will always tow better and at the higher trailer weights they will transform the rig to a serious towing machine up from the laboring feel of the 3.73s. With a RWD truck the cost of regearing is halved as you only have one set of gears to change, so that is a nice plus.
What is the asking price ?? Add says call (Dip Wads). What's your budget ?? Are you sure U want a RWD for towing a TT ? I'm looking at a truck in Va. & have a 00 4X4 for sale on the cheap... Possible drive & swap if it works ??

The asking price is $9,985. My budget is between $7000-10000. Main goal is a clean lower mileage example. I just prefer the 2WD because the majority use will be daily driving in South Carolina and even if we get some snow/ice it only lasts about 24 hours, so the "need" for 4WD is not there and I assume I can gain 1-2 mpg without 4x4, but I may be wrong. Let me know what you have and we can talk, but I assume if it is "on the cheap," then its condition/mileage may not be what I am looking for.
My dad bought a 4x2 to tow his 33' travel trailer. On the FIRST trip, he got it stuck in the mud trying to turn around after making a wrong turn. Snow and ice are not the only reason to have 4x4. Just sayin'

Well it is under your budget And probably does not fit the bill. I think your just about right on the MPGs. You should see around 12 on a RWD. Here is a pic anyway: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...s-for-tom.html
It's completely stock on the far Right.
Once I move back to AR I will be about an hour away from there. But that won't be until May and doesn't really help you...lol. I must ask for pics of this 96 Tbird. I have had 7 of the MN12 variety cars and love them.

Here is the T-Bird:
It is a 1996 with a 4.6L V8 from an Explorer (aluminum block), with forged rods and pistons, a SVO supercharger, built transmission, 3.73 trac-lok, 3800 stall converter, hi-flow cats, with true 2.5" exhaust and obvious cosmetic upgrades. Definitely a sleeper that is a lot of fun on the street or dragstrip.
That's a nice Bird, never owned one myself but have had a few SN95 mustangs. SVO blower and Explorer WAP block are something I've always wanted to do if I build a 4.6 for one of my mustangs.. oops forgot that this is an Excursion board haha.
Thanks for all the comments/compliments on the Bird, but back to Excursions. I have been talking to the salesman at the dealer in AR about the 2001 I posted above. He sent me the following cell phone pics and when i asked about maintenance he said there are no records in the truck and that there is currently a leaking transmission line and coolant line that they are repairing before selling. Should either of those to issues be a concern, or as long as the dealer repairs them appropriately (i.e. replace with new hoses/lines) instead of band-aiding the problem, should it be ok?
