welp, appears to be the water pump as opposed to some simple fixes I was hoping for. May have to bite the bullet and take it to the local shop due to time constraints.
I caved and am paying $500 to have it replaced with an Motorcraft pump, would have been about $100 less w/ an aftermarket. Just don't have the time right now, although after watching a video it appears to be a job one could do with an entire day and some patience.
It really is better to do it yourself if you plan to do keep the truck a long time. A shop wouldn't have taken the time to do the job right, like I did. If they did, it would have cost a fortune. For $500, all they're doing is draining it, replacing the pump, and filling it back up with whatever coolant they have laying around. A half-assed job, in other words.
Not a tough job on the 7.3. A few hours if everything cooperates. I did one on my 2000 F-250. Flushed and replaced fluids, thermostat, serp belt, etc. cost was about $350, using all ford stuff. Before you start, though, have the system pressure tested and verify the pump is leaking.
