Well, I went to change the transmission fluid and filter on my 98 ranger with a 3.0 L. I started added new fluid and found out I had overfilled it when I looked underneath and saw transmission fluid coming out of a pressure release (I guess) on top of the transmission. My question is, should I pull the pan and drain the excess and do I need a new pan gasket if I do that.
I was going by the manual spec of 9.5 quarts when the refill amount was 3 quarts. I got to 5 quarts when it started leaking.
Well, the entire transmission holds about 10 quarts, but if you dropped/drained the pan then you only lost about 3 to 4 quarts. So 5 would certainly overfill it. If the pan gasket is cork it will have to be replaced.
An easier solution is to pull a cooler line off, start it up and let it pump out a couple of quarts into a drain pan. It will only take about 20 to 30 seconds to pump out that much fluid so don't over do it.
Drop a length of small dia. vacum hose down the dip stick tube & pull it out . I have problems reading the dip stick ,the fluid in the tube smears all the way up the stick. So I always measure how much came out on a drain .
