Damaged Gear?

Quick question for the axle gurus. I was looking through some of my spare parts (gears, carriers, steering linkage, etc.) and noticed some of the pinion gears have small chips on the outer edge of the gear (the larger diameter side). These chips are not in the wear area (not where the gears contact each other), and thus I would think would not affect the performance. Some pinions have only one chip, others have 2 chips.
Are these gears OK to use or should they be scrapped?
Thanks,

Unless you can match them to the original rings that they wore in with, I'd never use them in a rear axle. Maybe in a front since it's not used all day every day...

Steve, I do have the matching ring and pinions, I was just referencing the pinion chips. But you don't see a problem with reusing them if it is not in the wear area?

How did they chip? Were they tossed around a scrap pile or something like that? If they came out chipped that would make me wonder a little.

I am 99.99999% sure they were damaged either during the removal or just being stacked/moved around and stored. The ring gears look perfect with a centered wear pattern. The chips are located at the thinnest and most vulnerable point on the teeth, and thus all the chipped teeth are consistent in appearance (look as though they were dropped on a concrete slab or other hard surface.
So am I right in assuming they should be OK to re-use?

I would use them if it wasn't my brand new superduty. I would use them in my backup rig or 4 wheelin' rig. Worst that can happen is you waste them and have to buy new ones anyway.
