99 explorer won't crank when hot

so the other day my wife had to get a jump to get home. When she got home I tried starting the car and just got clicks. I let it sit overnight went out the next day expecting to have to charge battery but it started right up I took it for a 20 minute ride turned it off and would not crank. After it sat for a while with no jump or charge it started. So today I changed the starter and no difference still acts like dead battery when warm. Cables seem good tight and corrosion free battery tests ok with load on it not great but ok. Wondering if anyone has had this problem

When it fails to start hot do you get a single click when the key is turned to the Start position or a rapid series of clicks?

Sometimes it would click a few times sometimes just one. Today I came out and test ester volatage and had 12.53 but only 9.9 with a load on it so I bought a new battery and so far so good. Oh and it would slow crank first

It sounded like the old battery has a dead cell.
They do that sometimes.

Yeah think so I just took it out for a good ride to let it heat up and it cranked fine when I got home. So probably just needed a battery and not the starter but oh well one less thing to fix later
