I have a 2000 Expedition. On my way home from an out of town trip yesterday, I started to notice what sounds like a roaring or hard humming noise. It sounds a lot like a truck with huge tires sounds when it goes down the road so I thought it was road vs. tire noise. I took it and had the tires rotated and balanced when I got home but it is still doing it. Any ideas?
4x4? Coming from the front? If so, check the front differential for proper fluid level. Mine made a similar noise and when I took the service manager for a ride, he commented that it was a tire noise. I had him listen a little more closely and he decided it was not a tire noise but a lubrication issue. One differential service later and all was well.
Heh Oahu if yours is 2wd, you will not have a front differential. You may have an auxilary colling fan that is staying on and generally makes a roaring noise. It is usually more noticable on acceleration.
I had differential service done yesterday and it seemed to make noise go away. The tech said the diff fluid level was ok but the fluid was "nasty". Thanks to everyone for their advice.
