Hello all, I have a 1988 Bronco II that I want/need to put wheel adapters on. I've never done anything like this before so I was wondering if I could get some tips/advice on installing, brands, size range, and whatever else I'm missing. Also, what's a good place or site to buy them at? Thanks!
What are you trying to adapt to? The pattern for the BII is 5 on 4.5". Billions served, millions from the BII, Ranger and Explorer will fit. (16x7 from Explorer for example would be quite an upgrade from the 15 x 5.5" stocker)
If you are thinking of putting some huge tires on it, think again. The axles are not going to like that.
Yeah I bought it with 31's on it. I wanted to space the wheels out a bit so the tires won't hit anything. I'm not really trying to adapt to a different size, just want to use the adapters as spacers. I heard I shouldn't use spacers if I plan to go 2" out.
Spacers probably aren't going to be your best option then. Think of the traction beams as levers. As you space the wheel out farther the force exerted on the ball joints, coil springs, etc. increases. You will wear your ball joints much faster but more importantly it will throw off your wheel camber causing the tires to wear faster on the inside. It will almost certainly mess with your steering too.
Some other options:
A 3" body lift would help wheel clearance a lot and could be purchased for about $200 including body mount bushings. I have 30"x9.5 tires and my 2" body lift makes everything clear nicely.
Another avenue, depending on what kind of condition your body is in, you could cut a little off the wheel wells and cover with aftermarket fender flares.
Or put on some stock tires to improve your mileage, road handling and gear ratio. Even just running 30's my 5th gear is almost useless.
I was actually considering a lift kit after spacers. Especially since I would probably need at least 2" spacers. Is a 3" lift the highest that would be recommended on a BII, or can I go a bit higher?
Personally Im not a fan of body lifts. Go with some coil spacers up front and an add A leaf in the rear and you will be much better off and will fit 31's just fine.
