So I've been contemplating a chip for my 1995 7.3 E4OD PSD and am torn between the TS and the Hydra. I've done a lot of searches on the forum and the Hydra seems to be a favorite, but I can't search for "ts" too well because the forum doesn't recognize words that are that small. What are the benefits, aside from cost, from one to the other?
Are there negatives to installing a chip? I do not drive like a bat out of hell or anything, but I wouldn't mind some power. I will not be running the max tunes often, if at all, but I am concerned about potential damage to motor, transmission? This E4OD really concerns me from what I read and can't afford a heavy duty component one from one of these transmission companies at the moment. I'm going tomorrow to get a transmission fluid change oil change etc, but I am always on the lookout for what to do and not to do. The leak I had when I was looking at buying the truck was diesel fuel and has subsequently stopped.
Sean-I saw that article and perused it thoroughly, but it didn't do my to assuage my fears about what a chip could potentially harm on my truck. What are the negatives of a chip in general?
I just got a hydra and I like it.my understanding is that a chip shouldn't hurt anything mechanical if you are not too crazy. The trans shifting gets better with most programs. I like the change on the fly ability an also that you can change tunes on the chip easily without removing the chip. That is if 16 tunes are not enough. Make sure you have gauges with any chip as they will tend to increase egts by dumping more fuel. My truck is stock except for this chip, tymar intake and an intercooler. I do have boost, trans temp and a pyro gauge. The stock hydra tunes are nice since many are special purpose which is great if your needs dictate a different tune for certain driving scenario. My only comparison is to an edge evolution tune that was in the truck when I got it so that's my perspective. I only drove my truck stock once and it sucked. I removed the edge tune and installed the hydra and so far so good.
Awesome. Thanks so much. I will definitely be getting some gauges (glow shift? Or others?) and the Hydra after further reading today. I don't drive like a mad man but I do love powaaa
Hey man I just installed a hydra with swaps tunes. It makes so. Much. More. Power.
However, I also installed some rosewood stage 1 injectors at about the same time. I have my egt gauge and have been watching it closely to see wakey I am dealing with. First off, I can hit 1200 pretty easy just going up a slight grade at 70 empty. That was a huge surprise. I was in my "highway economy" tune, rolling some serious smoke. I don't know if I need to just use the hydra "stock" tune or what.. I'm currently doing a mpg test with the highway econ which I will compare to the hydra stock later.
Basically, long story short, I was going to spend 500 on a ts chip including custom tunes or 700 on a hydra with custom tunes. It was totally worth it to me to get the hydra. As they say, just my .02
Thanks. I'm still learning the basics of EGTs and boost but I have a relative feel for it. This week I am learning the basics, oil change, etc. laugh at me if you will, but you gotta start somewhere! Lol
Hey man.. I'm definitely no pro.. Everything I've learned pretty much has been from hours and hours of reading threads and articles on this site.. And I mean hours lol.
