my 79 f250 has recently started doing something strange. when i have my headlights on the right turn signal arrow in the cluster glows a light green. i turn my right signal on and the glowing arrow goes away and it flashes bright then goes pitch black then bright then pitch black ect like it should. im not sure when it started happening but sometime after i noticed this problem i also noticed that at times the truck starts slowly. i mean it turns over hesitantly like a low battery or timing too far advanced. it only turns over slowly when its warm and its always started and never left me stranded but i THINK these 2 problems may be connected unless its just heat from the exhaust soaking into the starter. what are your ideas on what to look for to fix my dash predicament? all my lights light up bright as they should also
my terminals are clean but the starter only drags when its warm... driving for a half hour or more in 110 degree heat.
as far as lights i just need to check the sockets right? the light doesnt get brighter or dimmer from wiggling wires. could it be my turn signal switch itself?
The turn signal indicator is an indicator of a bad ground, usually in the back but not always. The parking/running light filament feeds back through the turn/brake filament making the indicator lamp in the dash glow.
I don't think the two are related. From personal experience the lights are a bad ground. Is/was one of the turn signal lenses cracked? Check the sockets for corrosion. You may have to replace a socket but it's not that hard. I prefer solder/heat shrink tubing in this application.
Use a piece of wire and try grounding the bulbs. Go from the brass body of the base to the frame or metal of the truck. When the lamp on the dash goes out you have your culprit.
alright guys. thanks for the help. i just bought a new project that ill be working on my next day off but i think i can make time to do it on the weekend. ill let you know what i find
