About 9 months ago heard a strange noise when shifted into 4 wd , sounded like driving over those grooves on the side of the highway to keep people awake.
Had to pull over to stop , as it would not go back into 2wd with the noise still going.
Then it stopped , after shutting truck off and restarting.
Then earlier this year after trying to do it again in 4wd had bad clunking noise and was hard to get back in 2wd , I can here the shift motor engaging and the dash reads in 4wd, seems its not engaging fully in 4wd and not going back to 2wd, its a very bad clunking noise, shakes the whole truck, any ideas?
Sorry , its a 2008 f250 , 5.4 l , not sure what tranny , transfer case is new process , I will get the model , thinking 270 something., will know in a day or so. transfer case is nv273 f
Drained the oil out , yes its dark but no metal or shavings.
Took off the shift motor , hooked it up to 12 volts and it moves, not
sure how much its supposed to , it seems to move almost 90 degrees
back and forth.
Gonna have to help us a little more about what you're driving... Year, engine, transmission, transfer case... whatever you know, post.
All I can get from your post is you're driving some sort of vehicle that has electric shift 4wd. Honestly its not even clear if you're driving a ford.
I have a 2008 f250 , 5.4l , new process 273f transfer case , drained the case oil, no metal that I can see, but it is dark oil , took off the shift motor and tested it with 12 volts , goes back and forth about 90 degrees , switching the contacts each time, thinking the motor is o.k.
Don't want to buy a new one if this one is o.k
Do I need to remove the t - case to go further?
Sorry I can't help much further, I mostly tinker with trucks in the 80's-90's range... and manual t-cases.
Hopefully someone else here can step up to the plate and help you out.

I know this is an old thread and a long shot but did you ever get this figured out I have almost the same exact thing going on with my 99 f250 7.3 with the nv273 t case I rolled under the truck and with the front hubs locked I got like a quarter turn out of the front drive shaft if thinking the chain in the case may be stretched I'm not sure tho I know my lower ball joints are bad I'm doing those this weekend but my front hub bearings and axle u joints are new as of November and the drive shaft u joints seem good too
