I was changing the oil on my 2003 Ford Expedition (5.4L v8) yesterday. I noticed something that is missing. Can you help me identify it?
There is a missing seal on the housing directly to the rear of the oil pan.
I am fearful its a seal to the underside of the transmission and its obviously missing its fluid. So how FUBAR am I? I am not sure how long its been missing, but I didn't notice it missing at the previous oil change (about 3 months ago). The fortunate thing is that I've not noticed a driving problems.
I don't believe it's a big deal however you should get a replacement cap to keep debris and other junk from getting into it.
I did a quick search for you and found that the hole is used to gain access to the torque converter oil plug... so from what I can tell no oil or anything is stored in that area where the flywheel is located.
In the old days, there used to be a drain plug for the torque converter and you could access it through that hole. But they stopped putting drain plugs on in 2001, but they left the access hole for it..
