When I had my tranny (4R55E) flushed they had a book that showed it should take Dexron with some Mercon. I had them do the entire thing with Mercon V due to everything I've read here. Yesterday, I dropped my pan, cleaned out the gunk and changed the filter, all went well, but all the local parts store carried was apparently a mix of Dexron and Mercon. It was labeled Mercon Dexron and I am now confused. Are both of these fully Synthetic? Will it matter in the long run if this is what I used to top it off? Is there any place to buy just plain Mercon V?
Boss 358 you are correct; they are the same thing and are advertised as such, at least now they are. But now there are also two "grades" of Dexron/Mercon with any given alpha/numeric code afterwards.
One grade is a standard which encompasses Dexron I-III and Mercon (most new Fords and all GM's)
The next grade is a "Super" which covers all the newer Dexron and Mercon applications up to V (five). This "Super" is also used in other vehicles/transmissions such as conveyor belts, tractors, oil drilling apparatus, and so on.
Neither, however, will substitute for Type F. If you have a Type F tranny, you're stuck with the fluid.
I'm not positive, but I think Chrysler has opted for a separate variant of its own where none of the above will work either, but you have to add a "de-foaming" agent into it because it has a tendency to act like beer when shaken.
