My Escape overheated, had the radiator and water pump replaced then blew a gasket and more. Wondering whether it's worth getting the engine rebuilt, replaced or buy another vehicle. I don't want to chance blowing another engine because of some undiagnosed cooling system problem. Any thoughts?
The head gasket probably blew from the overheating. You can do a pressure test of the cooling system to check for leaks. Borrow or rent one of those pumps that attach to your radiator fill neck and pump it up to about 20 psi, and listen for leaks, or watch for pressure drop.
If you need to replace the head gasket, at least have the head resurface checked and resurfaced if necessary, and have the block checked for deck straightness. If the deck is straight, this may be the cheapest fix.
Then make sure the cooling system is working properly; you have a new water pump and radiator, so they should be good. You might want to replace the thermostat, and make sure the fan comes on when it's supposed to, and the temp gauge (or idiot light) is working so it can warn you in case the cooling system stops working for some reason. This is the best way to prevent future damage.
