ICP voltage question

Just a quick question but is it normal for the ICP voltage (ICV) to jump around a lot at idle or while cruising or accelerating? Started watching this pid and not sure what's normal and what's not. Thanks!

Ok, after more searching I found what I was looking for.

ICV (ICPv?) does fluctuate and it is normal.

But it really should move around to much as idle... should be pretty steady... 580'ish.
Some run 650'ish, Fluctuation should be maybe 20 or less, more closer to 10... at least mine is.

I was seeing ICPv on my SG2 jumping from .81v to .65v to .80v to .73v and so on (while at a warm idle). Having just started monitoring this I wasn't sure if it's normal but after some searching and some pictures apparently it's normal.

If I monitor ICP% it usually runs around 570'ish at hot idle with it fluctuating between 560'ish and 580 or so which really isn't too bad I guess.

do you notice the RPM hopping around as well? If so, unplug the ICP and see how it does. Check the connector for oil, if it's soaked, replace the pigtail and the sensor. You may need to replace the sensor anyway if its hopping all over.

You know it's kind of weird but I can hear a change in engine tone every now and then while it's idling and the RPM needle will just very barely fluctuate but I'm talking like maybe a hairs width in jump. It's almost imperceptible. But I don't notice a relation to that and the ICPv jumping.

I turned the HVAC off because I thought it might be the A/C causing the idle fluctuation but it still does it. The truck seems to idle fine although my injectors are incredibly loud.

Thanks the suggestion on pulling the ICP connector! I'll check that this weekend and see if there's any oil in there. And I'll run it for a while with it disconnected to see if it helps.

It could be a trash on your IPR screen. If your IPR hangs a tweak and the PCM adjusts it by commanding a bit more oil to maintain idle you could get a squirt of HPO and an idle jump. Not really a good explanation but I think you catch my drift.

A change in engine tone while idling can also be from the VGT turbo "exercising" itself. Part of the engine programming is to move the vanes while idling to help keep them from sticking.

Explanation was good enough.

How hard is it to pull that IPR out? Looks like it's a real bear to get to.

bob, I can definitely hear when it does a vane sweep and can also see the VGT% changing on the scangauge. But when this little, tiny change in RPM happens the VGT% is solid.

I do have AE but the darned contribution test is almost worthless unless you have an injector really hanging up badly.

Hmmm.....I wonder if I could log some pids in AE to catch this slight RPM change? Like maybe RPM, IPR, ICPv and I'm not sure what else?

The right socket and a long extension, not to bad. Socket is like $60 or you can cut one of yours to make due.

Lisle 68210 IPR Socket for Ford Diesel on Amazon $25.29 and if you're a prime member you can get free 2 day shipping. You might also check local autoparts stores. I got mine here in town for $20 a couple of years ago.

You'll have to pull the FICM to get to the IPR. It's a little bit of a job, but not ridiculous.

Very cool! Thanks for the info help.

Damn, it looks like an o2 sensor socket. But I suspect quite a bit larger.

Edit: One "Lisle 68210 IPR Socket for Ford Diesel" on its way. Will be here on Wednesday.

Checked the ICP connector for oil and it's dry as a bone. So I'll drive it some today and see if it feels any different with it disconnected.
