I have an 86 F250 (non HD) w/ the 4spd Auto tranny, 302 w/AC. Recently had the oil driveshaft shear and have a busted shaft in bottom of oil pan (was a shelf engine from warehouse a number of years ago) and metal shavings all over the place.
Honestly I'm not sure what woulda caused this, the truck runs firewood around town, and works on my farm..
SOOO.. Its time for a different engine.
Besides the 302 and 351, are there any other engines that will mate up to that transmission and fit comfortably in this truck? What range of years will fit in this truck.. IIRc its like 83-92 or something right? Obviously I won't have the electronics to run a 95+ engine..?
Anyone know of places or people near Frederick County MD (not far from PA via Rt 15, Harrisburg, Gettysburg etc) that have pulled engines on a shelf, or good quality junkers I can have hauled to my buddies shop to pull the engine?
The simplest swap would be a 83ish-up 302 from Bronco or truck. It would have the correct balance(50oz), it would have the correct rear sump oil pan, and everything will bolt up and fit. If you get a later engine(later usually means less miles) you can strip the top of the engine down and then bolt your older intake/sensors and stuff on it and drop it in so everything fits. Same with a little bit earlier engine, it will be carbed so you will have to swap the top of the engine over to the new carbed engine.
You can get a 302 from a mustang or some other car, but you will have to swap oil pans, and also do the top of the engine swap. You may also have to do some swapping on the front like the timing cover and waterpump, but you should have all that on your old engine. With a ho mustang engine you will also have to move the sparkplug wires around, it has a different firing order.
You can use a older engine, older than 83-82. You will have to use it's balancer and a older style flywheel, since the balance is 28oz. You will have to strip the carb stuff off and put your intake and sensors on it, and if it's from a car you will have to swap oil pans and also swap the oil pump suction pipe and the main mounting stud for the pipe. You also need to keep an eye out for the dipstick if you have to swap pans. If the dipstick is in your rear sump pan, it will come right along with it, no problem. If your dipstick is in the side of the block, you need to make sure your older car block has a spot for it you can knock out and install your dipstick. If not, you are in trouble since you don't have a place for the dipstick in the rear part of the engine, which you need for a rear sump oil pan.
You can install a 351w, it will bolt in. But the oil pan rules apply, and you will have to find a fuel injection intake for it, the 302 intake system youo have now will not fit a 351w. You will also have to find truck or bronco exhaust manifolds, even though the 302 manifolds will bolt up to the 351w heads, the y-pipe won't bolt up. You also need to check out the oxygen sensor location on any swapped exhaust manifolds. I suppose the 302 injection system you have would supply enough for a 351w, but you would have to read up on that to make sure.
A 300 six would also bolt up to your transmission, but it needs frame brackets, and different radiator, a whole different fuel injection system, really a can of worms that I would not do.
83 till they quit making them and started the 4.6. When was that, 97? I suppose a explorer engine would work too, though I don't know what type of oil pan it uses. As long as you swap your engine's stuff over, all you need is the long block(block, heads, etc.).
great!! just got an email about a 351w about an hour away from a 95 bronco... has FI and oilpans etc.. still in the bronco.. gotta find out when it last ran and go check it out... thanks for all the help
Last dumb question that google isn't answering for me.... what if anything needs to change to mate up a 351w that is currently tied to a 4spd manual... to mate up to my 4spd c6 auto?
The 4 spd auto is an AOD, the 3 spd with no OD is the C6. To attach your AOD, you'll need to change out the clutch flywheel for a flex plate and poss a spacer.

Not sure what you are going to do there. If you do have the AOD, Ford never put a 351w in front of it, it's not a strong transmission. But there are some people on here who have done it with success, so long as you don't beat on the tranny.
You are going to have to do some head scratching. Your 302 is a 50oz imbalance flexplate, the 351w is a 28oz. I don't know if a 351w/c6 flexplate will work on the AOD. I think they may have had the AOD in the early days(previous to 83-82) when the 302 had a 28oz inbalance weight like the 351w has. Keep doing some research.
