engine swap

ok fellas, im takin the 302 outta my 78 shortbed..and installin a fresh 351w..
my question is the oil pan..the 351w has a rear sump..and the 302 has a front sump..but the truck has the steering behind the front axle..non of my friends know fer sure..they all drive chevs....which pan do i need...pleez help..

Is this truck 4X4 or 2WD?? (sounds like 2WD) Is the 302 the original engine?? is the oil pan the original oil pan?? If so then use the oil pan and pick up from the 302. You may want to buy a new pick up tube since your building a "fresh" engine, or atleast make sure the original one is clear and super clean. -Ed

its 2 wheel drive...im not sure if the 302 is original...but t was a v-8 a/c auto truck according to some #'s my friend looked up..i was told i could use the 302 pan but wasnt positive cause in the hot rod books the pn's are 1 digit off..cool thanx man...it sposed to be an indy edition..if it isnt the cat i bought it from dropped a load on oem interior..and the rest of the truck is very nice..thanks again

The 351W uses a different pan than a 302. They do not interchange.

ok i was afraid of that..but will a rear sump pan work with the rear steering arrangement...if not im kinda stuck on which pan to order..im not a 100% but i dont think a 78 f100 ever came with a 351w..if any one know lemme know please..because none of the midwest rednecks r fer sure....and when a rednecks not sure it worries me<G>

The rear sump will work if you are not running a steering stabilizer.
It gets real tight with a steering stabilizer.

oh man thats so cool..i didnt want to buy a pan..i woulda but i can use the change some where else...thanx..
