Multi Source Video project.
I got my Ex Friday, and originally my first few mods were going to be '08 and up tow mirrors and things like that. However, it came with a nice but a little dated Pioneer AVIC-D3 head unit. My kids found out that it plays DVDs and that was all she wrote. I am going to install two 7in headrest monitors, and a 13 inch flip down. That will get video input from the head unit, and also a few other devices. The 1st is going to be an HD player that will have a 1 TB hard drive attached to it.
I started this thread to document the project. I will install the monitors, rearveiw camera and spliter 1st, then hopefully next month, I will add the HD player/harddrive combo and the Miracast.
I wanted to be sure the upholstery sat flush with the monitors. There is no foam is the seat back, below the monitor location.
For around $6.00 I got this foam at walmart in the crafts section. You get 4 large squares, I only used 1.
My seats had a small section above the monitor that was without foam, it was rounded off, so I cut the foam to fill in that spot as well.
In order to have the foam stay in place, I left a small amout to go directly behind the monitor. That way, the screws holding the monitor hold the foam as well. However, be sure to cut out small holes where the screws go through. Otherwise, your foam will get eaten up by the drill bit/screw.
This is upside down, but here is what the lines are for. The top and bottom lines are the height of the monitor. The middle line is the point I want to angle the foam to, in order to kick the bottom out for a better viewing angle.
The angle.
I doubled the foam above and below the monitor. Using 3M spray adhesive to hold the parts together.
Spray each piece, stick them together, then separate them and let them get tacky. Now stick them together again for good.
How it will fit.

I used this seam as my lower mark.
With the cloth, I was able to press the mounting dock firmly to the seat...
..And leave a guide mark.
The 1st cut....
You will remove this foam..Then stick the foam I cut inside the cavity, and screw the monitor dock in place.
Here is the finished product, it's a little off center, but the metal seat back has raised portions that were giving me a hard time drilling. I should be able to use a punch and center them up a little better.
Side note: The screws that come with the monitors are junk, pick up some good quality sheet metal screws.
I took the easy way out with the 13 inch flip down. Originally, I was going to mount it toward the rear, for just the 3rd row. Instead, I removed the redundant rear air controls and mounted the monitor in its place. I fished the wires over, and did not have to even drop the headliner.

Here is a shot from the 3rd row, the center screen is the head unit.
I also added a rear view camera, helps for when the 13 inch monitor is flipped down.
