It leaked anyway on water test so out it comes for 4th try. We went too sparingly on crl sealer anyway.
Curious. Are you using the same rubber each time?
I'm wondering if the different brands have different depth size lips that fit over the body. Is that possible? The rubber I got at LMC seems to be short lipped.
It's DC each time. It leaks in the corners. I think between us trying to wrestle the trim in with the window set and being to cautious about CRL usage disrupted the bead.
I'm now thinking you have the same issue I have - the glass is too small to push the rubber out far enough. I have a 1/8" gap at both bottom corners where you can actually see the edge of the metal.
I think the glass is fine, good coverage on the lip all the way around-both sides. It's actually a glove fit. Last time we used a lot of crl but had the clips that derailed us at the end. This last time we eliminated the clips but went too sparingly on the crl, barely had a bead. That coupled with us prying, hammering, tugging, jerking, crying, and swearing at the ss trim I think derailed us this time. But it only leaked in 1 spot which is better than the last. Another gasket on the way for 4th try!
I think I will try it with the sealer on the metal edge groove only. I just pulled the windshield from a 55 Buick yesterday and it had sealer only on the metal edge, nothing on the glass side. Makes sense since the glass will be perfectly smooth, the metal not so much.
It's my understanding that you have to install the trim piece in the rubber before you put the rubber on the glass.
Not what I did and I would not want to try it. My success was with a right sized glass (thanks to Josh for a pattern from a script windshield) and a new Drake gasket. As I worked the trim ring in, (gasket installed on the glass first) I used duck tape holding the trim and rubber in place on the glass. I had to install the ends of the trim and clip at the bottom after installation in the opening.
If I read my shop manual correctly, it says to put the trim piece in after the windshield is installed. Mine doesn't have the trim, and I'm still tying to figure out the tabs - the manual says to bend them "down" before removing the glass, and then bend them back up after the install. How do you access them to do that - pry along the seal until you find them? It seems like you might have to bend the upper ones "up" and the lower ones "down" to get the glass out. - Bob
Well I gave my windshield install a shot. New rubber, original glass. I cracked it right down the center while trying to give it a push. A new windshield is about $250 plus nearly $135 in freight shipping. Then I still have to install it and I'll probably just crack it again. So I called the local auto glass shop. $250 for new glass, installed in my driveway. I'll take it!
