Which filter

Time to change the oil on the F1. I was told it was a fresh change, when I bought it and the oil looked it. Any way, it's time again. I have seen the Fram drop in, P-4. Does anyone know of a better original type filter? I have found the Fram locally but the guy behind the counter said that's the only one they carry.

It's the bypass type filter? NAPA Gold #1006, but be ready, bought one yesterday and it was $16!! NAPA's are made by WIX. Here are some other alternatives, all good brands:
Hastings LF101
AC P-209
Purolator P-84
Wix PC-1F
Ford 7HA-6731-A
Baldwin C-53-MJ
Hercules 39256-C

I have heard bad stuff about Fram filters. I've been using the Wix for ten years or so. They do the job real well. Napas are good too.

Me too, Toby. That's why I was hoping for other brands.
Thanks Ross. That's just the list I needed.

I just checked with my local Ford dealer, they don`t have a listing for an FL-25 here in Saskatchewan.

Maybe you oughtta move to Manitoba!

FYI: The FL-25 filter is obsolete (as is 7HA-6731-A), no Ford dealer or obsolete parts vendor in the US has any either.

I didn't realize the price on these filters had gone up so much. I've still got a a few NAPA 1006's that I bought in 2013 for $6.98 ea. I always used Fram C-4's years ago. I think some of the original filter bodies had a decal on them recommending Fram C-4. I've never had any issues with Fram oil filters even though the brand has changed owners several times, and the Internet has a lot of negatives about them. They are still made in the USA, though - something that can't be said about some NAPA filters. On an original bypass system, I don't think it makes a whole lot of difference on the quality of the filter, since only a portion of the oil leaving the pump gets filtered on each pass. - Bob

You have that right 52 4X4, bypass filters are not near as good at removing dirt as the modern full-flow types. In the days when they came out, it was a great improvement over what was formerly used, which was nuthin' at all.

The best ways to keep your motor internals clean, is to service the air and breather filters regularly, and keep the oil changed.

That said, I would still get the Wix over a Fram.

What's wrong with Manitoba? There's a house for sale down the road from me. I'd even store a bunch of those 56 parts for you Sorry,

There`s not a thing wrong with Manitoba Grant but I happen to like my farm a lot here in Saskatchewan.
What 56 parts are you hiding that I should know about....

Like many low production things, it may be about demand vs. supply, as opposed to supply and demand. They're probably made in batches every year or so, and costs change whenever a new batch is run. That, coupled with the low demand, prices have to cover the increased costs over a smaller number of units.

Filter manufacturers made the canister bodies as well as the inserts. If you had a Fram can, it would tell you to use a Fram filter element. Same if you had a Purolater, AC, etc.

Not everything made in the USA is of top quality, unfortunately. It's a fact that construction quality is of bare minimum at Fram, and there are better filters available from many sources, not that they don't or won't get the job done. There's just a better chance of failure with Fram than others.
