Cleaning engine compartment

I know this has been gone over many times. I just rebuilt my hpop. Would like to clean valley and everywhere else under the hood. Is simple green the safest compared to engine brite degreaser ? I will be using hose pressure water and will cover intake and alternator. Thanks

Cover the power steering pump fill cap as well for good measure. I have cleaned my engine bay with Simple Green and garden hose shower nozzle on a cold engine many times.

Below is a picture of my engine bay about 8 months ago. I have cleaned it twice since then and it looks even better now.

Harbor Freight (and others) sell a handy engine cleaning gun that uses a compressed air blow gun with a suction hose you can dip in a bucket of simple green and water to give it a little more pressure, but directed at a fine point so you don't have to worry.

I've used both Simple Green and Engine Bright. No problems, so long as the alternator and power steering cap are covered.

Looks good, here's mine. I found some chrome plated acorn nuts for the plastic Powerstroke cover, got tired of the old rusted ones on there.

I have done this since the truck was new (simple green and water) and while I cover the PS cap, I have never covered the alternator.

OK guys Simple Green sounds great, the results look good, so which one of their products do you use? Here in the UK the only readily available one is the Extreme Motorsports Cleaner & Degreaser, I can order from your side of the pond but I want to get the right stuff then my engine bay can match the outside of my truck!

I use just the regular formula and refill with the big jugs like in the picture I have posted.

Shovelheadrob,

If you don't have simple green over there, it's not that exciting. Especially if you have to pay extra just to get it. I don't know what you guys have for a generic degreaser but sure you could find something on the same basics.

That is a coolant filter similar to the one that is on the IH water pump. There are several aftermarket sites that sell them.
