I bought a 96 f150 xl v8 with the 302w and I found out it had blown head gaskets I replaced the head gaskets and all the gaskets ubove it but when o torqued on the rocker arms I did them all at the same time not at tdc for each one so I tore it apart again and ended up tightening them up too much so two days ago I finally got them torqued right but now I can't get the Timeing set right. When I first tore it apart I didn't mark the distributer. I set it to tdc and aligned the spark plugs and it would start up for two or three seconds it sounded like a air gun almost so I set it to 10 Atc and still wouldn't start I've played with it and nothing then I set it to 10 btc it start up but idles at low RPMs and shakes the whole truck but it won't stay on for long maybe 30 seconds
If anyone has any advice Please help I need to get this truck running good
You have to set the motor at TDC on the compression stroke on cylinder #1(passenger side front), and then stab the distributor so that the rotor points to the #1 post on the cap. To find exact TDC remove the #1 plug and rotate the crank with a breaker bar or large ratchet until you get some air being pushed out the spark plug hole(put your thumb over it). The use a small piece of rigid wire to feel the top of the piston reach TDC. Now stab the distributor so that the rotor is pointed at the #1 post on the cap when fully seated.. which is roughly the 11 o-clock position when looking at it from the front. And make sure the base of the dizzy has room to rotate in both directions. With this done snug up the dizzy but leave it just loose enough to turn, crank the motor and if it doesn't fire rotate the dizzy clockwise and try again. If you have to crank the dizzy around a lot to get it to fine that means you're one tooth off so carefully pull it again and install it 1 tooth clockwise.
