Hello my name is Jerry. I am having an issue with this 67 ford f100 strait 6 3 speed all original. Someone before me replaced all the bushings underneath put a new gear box and even replaced all the original arms such as drag links ect.. my issue is the steering wants to go with every bump or dip in the road to a point were it feels unsafe to drive. All bushing underneath are fine same for the wheel bearings I've seen similar threads but my issue only happens on rough roads if i were to drive into town with no bumps and overall good roads the truck drives perfect. Its like its to tight and to responsive. I'm going to get an alignment done and it also has 10 inch wide tires front and back but would those bigger tires really cause it to feel so dangerous to drive. It also squeals tires on even the smallest of turns. Any advice would be much appreciated!!!
I think an alignment is a good idea but it could be the tires. I have a history of Goodyear Wranglers doing that. Especially if they have 1/2 or less of tread. Try rotating fronts to back and vise versa.
The wider the tire, the more contact it has with the road and the greater tendency it will have to tramlining (try to follow the longitudinal ruts in the road).
Wider tires will also mean a greater chance of hydroplaning on wet roads (more tire surface contact area, greater amount of lift on the tire (and thus the vehicle) by the water between the pavement and the tires).
My '2 F-250s both did that but neither had bad King-pins nor bad bushings.
I replaced the stock radius arm bushings on on of them with urethane. All the difference in the world!
Now I am going to do the other truck as well.
