I am considering replacement of the ignition coil on my truck. It has the stock coil now(14+ years old). Any thoughts on aftermarket compared to a stock unit? I did a search and found some threads with reference to a MSD tfi coil and MSD 6A ignition. Can I use the MSDtfi coil without the ignition?
If the coil passes the diagnostic tests in the Haynes manual, there's no need to replace it. I'd carry a spare, but you don't even need tools to move the 2 connectors onto the replacement and drive home.
aree as well.. in all my EEC-4 cars (have 5) i carry a spare module & a coil for emergencies. if you have the money for a replacement or aftermarket coil, go for it... it will save you a big headache if it breaks down one day cause of a bad coil..
if your running the original ignition module, replace that. i've had more of those fail than light bulbs on all my cars. they run about $30-40 for a stock-spec, you'll also might want to use the tool if you dont want to wreck an exsisitng socket (requires a "thin" socket to remove)
1987LTDmasta - By ignition module, is it mounted on the side of the distributor. It picks up the signal that used to be generated by a set of points. If it is something else, please give more information. I will check by manuals also. Thanks
