I am considering changing out my ignition coil to a MSD "E"coil. I don't think my stock coil is bad, I am just looking for that extra edge. Is ther any benefit to the coil without using the whole system? I cannot afford to do the whole thing right now and have heard the the MSD coil is a superior unit to a stock coil. How is the price on these units? What about the ACCEL "E" coil? From all that I have read about JACOBS, I will stear clear of their products.
I've had the MSD coil for about 2 years, and have had no problems at all with it. Supposedly, it puts out a hotter spark than a stock coil (40,000 V or so IIRC). I don't know if there is much of a difference over the stock coil, since I did the coil, MSD box and Mallory TFI unit all at once. I would guess that with the hotter coil alone, you might want to get some new plug wires, and maybe gap your plugs a little bit larger to take advantage of the higher voltage.
I got the coil for about $48 from Summit www.summitracing.com
If you're just replacing the coil there will be minimal if any noticable improvements. If you're going to upgrade the whole ignitions system, then buy the coil, if not don't waste your money go for the stock coil.
