302 timing mark on harmonic balancer

302 timing mark on harmonic balancer

Hi Folks. We are still trying to get my Grandson's 89 FSB to crank. What do the timing marks on the harmonic balancer look like? Some PO has put a white mark on the harmonic balancer where the pointer is at when the #1 cylinder is TDC. I was out playing in the mud this past weekend and met a Ford mechanic. He told me something about the wide cut in the harmonic balancer being for distributor timing. Is this true, or is there another mark on the harmonic balancer for timing?

My '92 has the degrees marked on the balancer. clean the edge of the balancer and you should be able to read them.

I can tell you from my recent trials getting the timing set on my '88 that the wide cut is not the timing mark. Look closely at the balancer and you will find degree marks from 10° after TDC to 30° before TDC. I had to clean the rust off of mine with steel wool to find them. Hop this helps some.
