Yes, left side of the frame (driver's side) in front of the steering gear box or so, top side of frame. The same number is usually found on the transmission bell housing under the tunnel cover, if it is original that is...
Ford stamped the S/N on the top front of the transmission; my 1940 is stamped there. Pull the transmission tunnel cover (probably not an easy task given the "patina" of the truck) if you can slide through a window. Visit VanPeltSales.com and click on the "Serial Numbers" link for more info. There is a picture of the S/N location on the transmission. Once you have the S/N you should be able to find a way to work with the DMV to register the truck. Just keep working your way up the food chain until you find someone who can help you. I would think that Lumbah's situation would apply to you; you would register it under the S10 VIN. Maybe DMV would let you change the make to Ford. Verify success in writing with DMV before spending any money on restoration. Looks like you won't be registering it for some time. Good luck! You have a lot more ambition than I do. Get in touch (join - they are probably a great bunch of people) with the local chapter of the Early Ford V-8 club for guidance and local sources. I joined and wound up being a director.
Awesome! Thank you for the advice I will for sure look into this. Well worst case I swap onto a s10 chassis like the plan and keep it registered as that. I know i am not the first person to run into this issue.
Well even though my grandma gave me the truck my uncle is pissed and saying he planned to restore it once retired, never touches cars or has the know how to work on anything. So i am being guilt tripped to not accept the truck. So anyone have ideas where to search for another and how much they usually go for?
Grandma gave the pickup to you and you accepted it. Now get a title in your name.
Is the uncle a little intimidating? You are not going to wait until you are retired to get going on the project are you?
Maybe you should take the pickup into town and spray it off at the car wash and put it in a garage. Possession is nine tenths of the law.
Or you can bid on this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ford-Other-Pickups-DELUXE-/181882948777?forcerrptr=true&hash=item2a59118ca9&item=181882948777.
It will probably bid up to about $15,000.
They are cheap and easy to find and make good power. I am not a purist I don't care if it has a Chevy motor in it. It will be on a Chevy frame also.
Small block fords are just as cheap and easy to find and also make good power. A 351W with a stroker kit and good set of after market heads really costs about the same as a comparable chevy. And you don't close any doors to the guys who would help or buy the truck later if you decide to sell it.

I wouldn't sell it as it was my grandfathers who is passed away.
Ignore the uncle and do what you want to the truck. I would also say to get the title situation settled and THEN do what you want to YOUR truck. Good Luck and keep us in the loop. We love pictures.
