This is my first winter with a diesel and my oil change is coming up. What weight should I be using for western MD type weather with a trip.or two to Buffalo, NY?
Also have to do:
coolant flush
Replace steering stabilizer, ordered a Rancho RS5000
If any money is left, upgrade to 08 Trans pan and filter.
I have an oil and coolant change planned soon. Waiting for my Ficm from Ed and also plan to work on my injectors and get them cleaned up as I have a serious case of stiction.
What majestic animals!
I saw the most remarkable view of elk as I was headed E. on I-70 up by Copper mountain Colorado flying as a group headed to Sturgis. It was cold, the sun has just about faded as we rounded a fast bend, there he was. A full rack bull with his harem just at the edge of the road. As we flew by I could see his breath vapor in the cold air like they just stopped from a hard run. It was clear he wanted to cross I-70. They were so close to the road , I think our loud pipes really startled him and his girls. What a rush!
Good times.
That's a picture I'll never forget, glad to share it with you guys.
One of the guys we rode with had "Long Shots" on his bike, from California we made him ride tail gunner the whole way because they were so loud.
Once in the Black Hills we stopped through Custer State Park where we were held hostage by the Largest Bison I ever saw. An easy 2000 pounds on the hoof blocking the road. This time the guy with the Long Shots was lead rider and once stopped, he had the brilliant idea to rev his obnoxiously loud bike in an attempt to have the animal "shoo" away from the road
That bull bucked like it was in a rodeo then charged his bike!
HAHA, you never seen such a bunch of cowards turn around any faster.
Later in the day we stopped and bought him a stuffed plush horned Bison and presented it to him as an "anti-Bison defense" so he could bungee it to his handlebars in an attempt to thwart any future Bison Threats during our trip.
Dumbazz is lucky he didn't get skewered!
So this is a "pre-winter maintenance" tip for ya'll; don't **** off a Bison when you're not in a cage.
I'm thinking of replacing, front end parts ( all of them ) for winter 2020/2021... I may also look under the hood once every few months, for no real reason other than just to look....Does that count?
Have to reseal/get a new gasket for my heatercore/box. I took it apart last year looking for a possible leak and I do not think it sealed correctly as the airbag and that side of the dash gets quite hot when the heater is running.
Torn between continuing using my 15-40 Rotella T and going to 5-40 shell synthetic. Have used 5-40 once and several oil drips appeared. Back to 15-40 and they stopped. Don't ask me, I have no idea why. The 5-40 is also quite a bit more expensive up here.
Other than that I put some mudflaps on to limit some salt spray and picked up some heavy duty tire chains. Ready to go for winter.
Great story...
Hearing an elk bugle at anything under 500 yards makes the hair on your neck stand up!
We were in Yellowstone 3 years ago, had bison walk close enough you could touch them out the window.
Some people couldn't even dream this stuff, it changes you, just like you said.
Couple years ago we saw a good size herd of elk, probably 30 strong. Two big, big bulls and a few smaller ones two. The lead bull screaming at the harem to get moving and the other big bull screaming at the cows not keeping up in the back. We watched that sight for quite a while.
Last year, watched a bull bugling and grunting at his harem pulling them into timber on the next ridge over while I was hunting. Never saw them again. But a great story over beers trying to catch up to them!
Two weeks ago, watched a marmot chase a blue grouse on the other side of a pond from me. Then had it chase a camp robber up the the pine tree right next to me while I was watching for elk at a pond. He ran right up the tree, turned around and started barking and growling at me for about 20 minutes before he gave up and ran back down the tree and took off.
Love being out in the wilderness! Too many cool experiences!
Oil change and 2 new batteries, if I get time pull down and look at the brakes and give them a lube job if anything. The brine salt they use on the roads here in Ohio is a killer.

What batteries are you going to get? I like the idea of Ford's warranty and 850CCA, but is the lead acid old fashioned? Optima still seems like a hype, or perhaps AGM is better for the cold.
