I've got a 90 bronco with the 5.8.
The engine is done... Thought about a junk yard motor for the short term, but I don't want to get a tired old motor either. My thought is a 5.8 of any year is still a 5.8 and should be an easy hookup. My buddy says no, my computer won't like it. Any input would be appreciated...
Yes any 5.8 EFI motor will work you just have to observe the #1 rule of engine swaps.. DO NOT use any wiring that comes with the donor motor, remove the upper intake and disconnect everything right on the motor in your truck, do the same to the donor before putting it in and then reconnect the original harness.
However.. If you get a '92+ motor you will have 2 challenges to overcome.
1) Distributor wiring is different.
2) IAT sensor may be missing.
1) On '92+ trucks they moved the TFI ignition module from the distributor to the fender so you need to use your '90 dizzy, but if you get a '94+ roller motor(and you should) you will need to install a steel distributor gear on it to match the steel roller cam, the stock cast gear from '90 will wear out quickly and the motor will seize up so don't do that.
2) They also moved the Intake Air Temp(IAT) sensor from the lower intake to the airbox somewhere in the mid '90s but I have read that that didn't happen for all models, in any case if the motor you get doesn't have one in the lower intake then you will have to swap on the lower from your '90. But look for it when acquiring the motor, it is in the #6 intake runner drivers side of the lower intake.
Thanks... Since this will be a short term motor, maybe a year or so... I'm willing to do a junk yard engine. Just to keep rolling while I build the dog thats in it into a beast. I just might throw a carb on the project motor and rid myself of all that computer crap.
That was meant as a jole. All that computer crap is actually pretty good when it works correct. If you dont think so just watch any top fuel funny car or dragster before a run and see all that computer crap they use.
