A new side step idea...

My brother and I were looking for a set of side steps for his '72 Highboy build and we were looking for something clean and simple similar to the TEDCO steps on my '75 highboy. We found some polished aluminum model A side steps on ebay meant for the running boards of the old fords and fabricated a step to mount the polished plates onto; I think the end results looks really nice. Handsome, simple, and not too bulky.

I have not seen this done before but it's pretty straight forward. If I do it again I would try them in aluminum as these stainless steps are probably about 10-12 lbs each. I still need to drill a second set of 2 holes mount another bracket that helps sandwich them to the under side of the cab.

Model A step plate inspired by old TEDCO step & slightly larger

I started with some stainless steel pieces hot off the laser (I love working at a manufacturing fabrication shop!) and convinced our best welder to glue them together.

with bottom skirt added and 10-32 holes transfer punched from madel A plates.

all TIG welded & looking good. The steps had to get flattened in the hydraulic press due to the warping from the TIG heat

After hours of grinding down weld beads and some time on the Burtex wheel the step base looks like this.

With the step plate attached

Installed on my '75 to get an idea but ultimately destined for a silver '72 highboy.

Wouldn't a stump, log, or small rock would destroy your handiwork? Nice touch.

Thanks for the compliments David!

Yes, a log or something could mess it up, but the '72 is 6" taller and will be mostly street driven + occasional sand dune time so hopefully nothing knocks it off.
If it gets wrecked it will give me a chance to do one in aluminum and the step plates are made every day so they are easy to get at around $55 per pair.

If I can find some time today I can clamp it onto my '67 to show how it would look on a bump side. I think it will end up closer to the bottom of the cab on the bump sides and not hang quite as low...

It's on the list for sure. As soon as I get an indoor place to tear it down it will get powder coated. Probably not for a couple of years but can't wait.

The mustang is a coupe - my first car which also needs restored. I've got my work cut out for me!
