302 water pump help

Good morning. I am installing a new water pump on my 302. It's either an 85, 89, or '90 roller motor. Can anyone tell me if any of the bolts are going to go through any water jackets or oil jackets. Also if anyone has any hints to improve my chances of success I'm all ears. There is no pump on there now to give me any clues. Thanks Matt

I am in the process of completing the same task on my truck, Same motor as yours. A few of the bolts do go into water, None are really in any pressurized oil passages. It should be able to easily identify the bolts. Give the long bolts going thru the timing chain cover into water passages a good coat of grease to make it easier to remove for the next guy.

Thanks for the info. Are you using the old bolts or did you access a bolt kit somewhere? I used an old bolt when I was a teenager and broke it off about six inches inside the block. "FOR SALE......AS IS"

Grease does not make a good water sealant. You should coat the threads of the bolts that see coolant with some type of sealant. I prefer liquid form-a-gasket like that made by Permatex. There are no bolts that see oil pressure as stated but some can see oil and therefore I coat all bolt threads with sealant. Never had a problem and used to build engines for a living. Others may have a different opinion but like I said I never had an issue and you don't want comebacks for stupid things.
