pricing

Hi Guys

I just got started looking at Ford trucks. I'm interested in the 2015 F150 Supercrew 3.5 Eco 4x4 XLT short cab model. I found a dealer advertising their internet pricing ( 200 miles away) substantially lower than dealers in my area. There are some trucks that meet my above criteria with a MSRP of 48k minus the package discounts from Ford that brings the MSRP to 46.5K with an internet pricing around 35K. Does this sound like a bait and switch at that deep of a discount. It was not on 1 truck but many in this price range of XLT.

You mean short box (5-1/2')?

When we were looking for ours, about the only thing on the lot were supercrew, 4x4, short box in various trim levels, mostly upper-end (King Ranch, Lariat, and some XLTs). If there are any left, that is likely what you will find.

OTOH, that might be what most people want, so all that's left are the dregs that no one else wanted.

Well that may be true. I'm happy to take a dreg that is left over for a discount especially when it's exactly how I would have ordered it . My point is the dealer out of town is selling the same similarly equipped dreg for a few thousand less than my in town dealers. Anyone seeing any dregs in your neighborhood for 11K off MSRP on a 46K sticker??

It's not a very likely real number. Depending on what state you're in there are many ways to hide numbers. Some states don't require the dealership to include destination charge in advertising ($1200 or so), some don't have any caps on doc fees (I've see $699 and heard of even higher), some places charge prep fees of up to $1000. Many will include several rebates that the majority of people don't qualify for. All this adds up to legit and legal advertising of much less than a local dealer may choose. All dealers buy the units for the same price. Yes, there are unit sales bonuses from Ford, but that's in the way of hundreds, not thousands of dollars difference. The first time you have trouble and the local sales guy you made a deal with goes to bat for you and the difference value is washed away. Not to mention the perks most shops give their customers like free inspections and what not. If you are crossing state lines you def won't be comparing apples to apples, but even within state lines, advertising strategies vary. A low price does not always mean a low payment. While it can be to the dealers benefit to negotiate by payment, a smart consumer will be able to use payment as well. You can't hid anything in the math of payment X term.

When I bought my truck in at the end of July I found an internet price that was way lower than any prices I was being quoted in the showrooms. I printed the listing and brought it to the dealership. I showed it to the salesman who approached me and his comment was "we'll sell it for that? Let me check it out". He came back and said he didn't know how, but the internet sales guy ok'd it so he sold it to me for the listed price. I got a $44k truck for $34k.

Yes, but you aren't accounting for a single warning I expressed. I'm not saying $11k is impossible as a discount, but the OP said closer to $13k, AND, even with $11k discount doesn't mean there wasn't fees and stuff hidden. Some of these places are incredibly good at hiding stuff. Very few people read every bit of fine print because it takes too much time. Heck, I couldn't tell you what all I signed away of my life back when I enlisted int he Army, and that's more important than buying a car, but I just didn't' care to read it all.

Edit: And for the record, I still wouldn't read all the fine print even working in the industry. Get me the payment I want and I'm a happy camper. Payment X Term. $100/72 is about $1.40 a month before interest. It's honestly not worth getting upset over when I pay $1.25 for a darn candy bar in a vending machine these days. But even that much will show up in simple math, so if you don't want to pay a penny too much, you can find the difference and call em out, or compare with other payments.

I'll give you $20k off any in stock F150, but there is a $15k prep fee that I won't tell you about until you get here, you also may not qualify for all rebates. This is an exaggeration but sale price numbers are the biggest load of crap in the industry and not a safe way to compare actual cost to you the customer.

The $34k was the out the door price. Nothing added.

It's a 5.0 XLT with equipment group 301A (Sirius radio, rear camera, rear window defroster), 36 gal tank, led bed lights, trailer package, power rear window, and chrome appearance package.

That's basically what I'm looking for as well except I was toying with the 3.5 Eco which I believe adds about $1300. But you have a couple upgrades extra with the 36 gallon tank and bed lights. Good job on a great price! Thanks for sharing.
