my 91 7.3 with e4od started shifting terrible over night to the point where it jerks the entire truck. I thought it may be the tps but I adjusted it last night to 1.2 v idle and it still jerks hard. It seems to be slipping. It won't shift out of first until ~21 mph. The harness on the passenger side of the tranny behind the heat shield is free from corrosion and debris. Tps harness is ok along with rpm sensor harness. My tach and speedometer work fine and my od light doesn't blink at all. I also replaced my eec (?) relay and that didn't fix it. My fluid is ok. But I don't know how to get codes from the truck. If someone can guide me through that it would be awesome. WHAT COULD THIS BE?!?!
First thing I would do is disconnect the batteries for about five minutes and then reconnect them. If it solves the problem, you were in limp mode. If it goes back into limp mode, get a scanner and read your codes. A scanner isn't too much, and anyone with an E40D should have one.

I disconnected the batteries and it fixed it somewhat. Shifts much better except from 1->2. Not as bad as before. I'm thinking this could be adjusted by the TPS? Am I correct?
Does it still shift hard, or just at the wrong rpm's? It could be your FIPL (TPS). IIRC you want 1.4 at idle and 4.3 at wot. I had to play with mine to get it just right.

I've read that the max is 1.1v then 1.2 v now 1.4 v idk which it is lol! Should I just play with it and stay within the 1.1-1.4 ball park and see which works best? Thanks, Josh
I could be wrong about the 1.4, but yes, you need to adjust it until it is shifting where you want it too. it has a lot to do with your driving habits and load hauling. I have found the best way to do micro adjustments, is leave the bolts snug, and tap the fipl with a punch to move it slightly.

Okay I plan on advancing the IP timing a tad (will this affect anything?) and I will adjust the TPS tomorrow afternoon. I will be sure to give you an update. Thank you for your help!
