I noticed some squeeking from my brakes so I lifted the front end with a floor jack so I could spin the wheels and listen. I found that the wheels would only spin about one rotation and I hear the disks dragging on the rotors. There are some slight grooves on the rotors but not too bad. My truck only has 15,000 miles and I was wondering if the calipers are not fully releasing. If I change the pads and turn the rotors do you think it will stop the dragging or is it time to rebuild the calipers?
Disc brakes normally have some drag and it's nothing to worry about unless the wheel are very hard to turn. If it turns a revolution when you spin it you're good to go.
How bad do the brakes squeek?
Somewhere in your owner's manual it says that some squeeking is normal and won't cause any problems. It sure can get irritating though.
You can try cleaning the pads and maybe deglaze them with some sandpaper.....while wearing a dust mask of course so you're not breathing brake dust
Dave, since I read your post, I looked in my manual and it says that skeaking is normal. I still don't think I should have grooves in the rotor after only 15,000 miles on the truck. Maybe I'll put some quiet stop pads from raybestos when it's time.
You probably shouldnt have big, deep grooves but some wear is normal. It can be caused by dirt etc getting into the brakes and also the pads on most newer vehicles are very hard and will wear the rotors some.
I've heard good things about Quiet Stop pads but have never actually used them. Let us know if you try them and how they work.
Since the truck is still under warranty, I'll take it in to have it looked at to see if the wear is excessive. I don't think pads and rotors are covered but calipers are and I want to see if they are sticking at all. I'm contemplating Brute Stop or Quiet stop pads to install. I'll post results later.
