Y Pipe issues

Hi all,

Hope someone can give a little guidance. 2 years ago, we had our y-pipes replaced on our 2007 6.0L F350. Shortly after, we had installed by the same shop, and aftermarket exhaust system kit. About 10 months later, one of the ypipes ( I don't remember which side, was replaced under warranty). Can't quite remember the issue. Recently, we were noticing a kind of "pip-squeak" spquel under acceleration. Short, fast and high pitched. Then it would go away until the next acceleration. The same shop is now telling us that the other y pipe is damaged from the after-market exhaust down pipe rubbing on it. We only received a voice message so far, but the office lady said her technician told her he sees this a lot. I am trying to figure out why they installed the kit if they KNEW it was going to ruin an expensive part like the y pipes?? I would appreciate anyone with experience on this to chime in.....I know more about gasoline engines than I do diesels.

If it's the down pipe that caused the problem the part affected would be the uppipe (from the passenger side exhaust manifold to the y pipe) what size down pipe did you have them put in?

That's too bad. The larger 4" downpipes do not leave much room for the passenger up-pipe and firewall.

If it's been an issue with their own mechanics then they need a new mechanic, as clearance can be made by dimpling the downpipe and rearranging the connections.

Thanks Josh! Good info.

KDAVID1, I am not sure since that was hubby's project and the receipt for the work is in the truck at the shop! We will be going by tomorrow to talk to them about this issue.

My current feeling - based on the information they have provided so far - is that there was a problem with the installation of the aftermarket exhaust system that they ignored, to my detriment.

Unless that new exhaust is shaped like a pretzel, I don't know how it can rub on your ypipe. I would go there and have them point it out to me.
The ypipe and up pipe are on one side of the turbo and they both are hooked up from the exhaust manifold and go directly to the turbo. The exhaust from the turbo to the catalytic converter does not touch either of the other pipes unless something is done wrong.

It's very easy to have the downpipe rub on the passenger up-pipe flex joint.

Josh

How would an installer prevent that?

Most downpipe kits come as 2 pieces, therefore, the upper section can be rotated away from the flex joint, but not too close to the firewall and the lower section can then be rotated to align with the exhaust.

On the Diamond Eye 4" downpipe that I have installed before, the section near the flex joint needs some massaging with a hammer to clear.

The MBRP downpipes I have experienced aew manufactured better to clear the flex joint and firewall.

Just wanted to come back and update. The shop did the right thing once they realized they had installed all of the equipment just a little over a year ago. They repaired the vehicle and the owner himself got involved to make sure it was done right this time.
