I have a 77 302 ac truck I am trying to put together. I was looking through the parts book at the engine section and see a series of parts I am missing. I have a 79 parts truck which has these parts in a little different position. I am wondering what they are and do I need them? Is it the emissions that CA requires? I am in MA, so Presume I don't need it?
On the lower picture there is a canister in front of the air cleaner part number 9B289 and a pump/motor part number 9A469 of some type that moves either air or a fluid. There are a few hoses that connect into the block?

On the lower picture there is the Thermactor Emission Air By Pass Valve in front of the air cleaner, basic part number 9B289
And a pump/motor part number 9A469 No such part number shown, look at the diagram again.
9B466 is a Thermactor Emission hose, 9A487 is a Thermactor check valve. Thermactor Emission = smog pump.
Depending on your states emission laws, these parts may be required, may not be.
if THIS IS ALL SMOG/EMISSIONS, AND SOME TRUCKS CAME OFF THE ASSEMBLY LINE WITHOUT THEM, THEN WHY ISNT THERE A PICTURE IN THE PARTS BOOK FOR A NON SMOG/EMISSIONS ENGINE? JUST WONDERING

I GUESS I NEED TO WEAR MY GLASES. THANKS FOR POINTING THAT OUT.

If the truck did not have Thermactor Emission, these pics were redundant, so parts guys ignored them.
If your truck is running well and you aren't sure what those parts are, a 20-something smog tech isn't going to know the difference. I too am in CA. I made the mistake as an 18 year old of taking off my smog components. I then paid someone to put it back (stupid tax). Now with some years on me and knowing some of these guys, trucks of that era often came with different configurations due to different state/regional/federal standards. Those trucks are allowed to burn VERY dirty. If you put a good cat it and everything APPEARS to be there, you're passing every time.
not true.
The air pump is a separate system from the catalytic converter.
mine has the pump but never came with cats
The reason they included an air pump was to provide excess air in the exhaust so that the oxidation catalyst (which Ford called a "thermactor") would have oxygen available to oxidize the CO and HC emissions from the engine. There's no reason to have the pump without the catalytic converter; if your truck was that way when you bought it, it's probably because a previous owner replaced the exhaust and removed the convertor, or (less likely) swapped in an engine from a vehicle that originally had cats and kept the air pump attached, even if your that's not how your truck was originally equipped. From the factory, they would've either both been present or both been absent. One doesn't work without the other.
the air pump attachs to the intake, my friend, not the exhaust.
edit: on mine it does
On the 351M/400, the air pump is plumbed into the exhaust crossover passage in the intake manifold. On the 302, it's plumbed into a tube that connects to the exhaust ports at the back of the cylinder heads. In both cases, it's pumping air into the exhaust.
