I'm new to this but I'm having problems figuring out why my 7.3 won't start on its own. It will fire right up with a gas rag and runs perfectly fine till I shut it off once I shut it off it will not start back up on its own. I changed the fuel pump and it still does the samething. Hpop is full of oil. Check all the fuses and they seem to be fine, the wait to start light comes on and goes off as it should.
The truck has 251xxx miles and as far as I know its completely stock. The only thing I have noticed different is while its cranking the oil pressure gauge stays at 0 but as soon as you apply the gas rag the gauge jumps and the truck fires right up.
I did. Noticed the tin nut on the ipr was missing I managed to have my girlfriend get her small hands under the fuel bowl she found it and got it back on I tightened it as much as I could but it still wouldn't start. What about a bad idm or maybe hpop failure?
ive never heard of hpops going completely bad, just getting tired and not working at 100% but ive only been on here for maybe a year. when my idm went bad it shut down half of my cylinders because it was running 2,4,6,8 like it was 1,3,5,7 and 1,3,5,7 normal so it would run but like a gas truck with a huge cam and wouldnt build any boost. try unplugging your icp sensor and starting. ill dig up the no start when hot flow chart real quick

this is all i could find atm NO START OR HARD START HOT 1.Refer to other hard start or no start issues below 2.IPR (Injection Pressure Regulator) bad, will cause low ICP 3.IPR o-rings bad, will cause low ICP 4.Injector o-rings bad, will cause low ICP. Should also show up as black fuel (from oil in fuel) in fuel filter canister. 5.High pressure oil pump bad, will show up as low ICP 6.Engine oil worn out or too thin 7.Cranking speed too slow, should be 180 rpm minimum when warm

I have tried unplugging the ICP still does nothing. It's at a mechanics now he said something about a stuck valve in hpop that he can "bypass" if that makes since.

There is no such thing , Have him pull the IPR and look at the small O ring on the end.Or haul it out of there
Check your voltage while cranking. Injectors will not fire if volts are less than 10.5
It sounds to me like its starting off the gas rag and once it starts the injectors take over and it runs fine. Is it correct?

Yes once its starts off the gas rag it runs fine, also I have tried starting it with jumper cables hooked to the batteries wouldn't that give it enough voltage?
Might have a bad starter, yes they do go bad and turn the engine over to slow for it to fire. The computer monitors RPM while cranking. Need a minimum of 100 RPM cold for the injectors to fire.
