I have a 2002 F250 super duty 5.4 XLT 4x4. I got home turned it off went to move it and it cranks but won't start. I sprayed brake cleaner in the intake and it started for a few seconds, back fired then shut off. Where is the fuel pump relay? Or how can I power the pump to test it? All the fuses are good, I swapped the relays under the hood with each other and still nothing. The fuel pump shut off switch is not tripped. Is their a way to test it? Please help as this is my daily driver and can't afford to send it to a shop or have it down. Thanks.
Remove the panel over the inertia switch so you can access the connector with your meter leads or test lamp probe. Monitor your indicator for the 2-3 seconds when the key is first turned from OFF to RUN (not START). It the lamp lights or the meter reads battery voltage during that priming interval, then the control circuitry is all working and the problem is most likely (but not always) the fuel pump.
You should be able to hear the pump during the priming cycle. Listen carefully.
It's often possible to rap the fuel tank with a rubber mallet or a chunk of wood to get it to start up when they start to go bad due to excessive internal wear (intermittent electrical contacts). If that works, you're on very, very short notice to replace the pump ASAP.
