have an 89 5.0l. had it in the garage looking at front end getting ready to order suspension parts to rebuild it. backing out it died. would not restart. only code was 33 egr. replaced cap and rotor(needed it any way) getting good spark. either started it it ran 1 min died again. either works to start but dies after either is gone. inertia switch not triped. Can not hear any pump when the key is turned on. To cold today but will be looking at it in a few days. What should i look for?
If by any chance the above said doesn't help, and you take down the fuel tank, check the connector for the pump (the one above the tank). with the key in the "ON" position, try pushing and moving the connector, if the pump seems to start/die etc, it's just the connector (wich might or might not need replacing). If nothing else, replace the pump.
Also, check the fuel rail, take the cap and see if it has fuel and is building pressure there. Btw, i was told that models up to 89 had dual pumps, so keep that in mind.
It's also possible to jump the fuel pump shut-off frm the ECM by grounding the test connection. It's the short side of the connection. The connection that's inboard when the test connection is stored. Ground that and the ECM signal to shut off the fuel pump after 3 seconds will not succeed.
Where is the fuel pump relay? I found the fusable link and it was good. After looking under the truck i ordered a high pres pump. Rust rust and more rust. If i have to take the tank down i will most likley replace the whole thing. Rock auto has good prices.
I looked it up on rockauto. I tink you have a power ditribution box in te engine compartment it might be underneith it attached to the bottom of it. also see if you have a fuse to it.
check fuel pressure at the rail with a gauge. also you can pull a plug to see if its getting fuel. with an 89 i wanna say there are 2 pumps. one intake and another back towards the tank mounted on the frame. might also replace your fuel filter if it hasnt been done in a while.

Checing the fuel pressure at the rail is definetl a good idea. I did not mention it because the op said he could not even hear the pump priming when he turned the key, check the inertia swithc the relay and the fp and see what happens.
like kemical said it looks like you have 2 fuel pumps a low presure in the tank and a high presure inline. I am not sure if I allowed to have a link to rockauto but here it is. the first part is the relay. I would try that first becuase of the easy cheap fix. imho also check to see if you have a large fuse for the pump . keep us posted RockAuto Parts Catalog
For future members can you elaborate and tell us how you determined it was the high pressure inline pump? did you do a presure test on it? How did the install go? How much was the part? Etc
