I lost the only key I had for my 72 f100 and since it is a work truck any way I want to replace the ignition sitch with a push button. Now the problem is I am not sure which wire I need to attach to the switch on which side which need spliced together and it I need to also put a on / off toggle switch in there. When I pulled the ignition switch out there were 6 wires attached to it a heavy black wire, a heavy yellow wire, red with green stripe, red with silver strip, a purple one and a heavy brown one that was into the same prong as the red/green one. Can some one tell me how to set this up???
It really would be just as cheap and easy to replace the keyset and switch and then some kid couldnt take your truck for a joy ride and leave you responsible for any damage they do while in the truck. I think the last switch i bought was less than $20.00 thats pretty cheap insurance. Just my opinon
Take a volt meter and check for 12volts. I would assume one of the large wires is the main feed.
As for which wire you need to hook up. You need to go find the wires on the soleniod on the inner fender. I think it is brown one that activates the starter, then look at the coil and find the positive side. I think it is the red/silver wire?
Find these back at the key. Put a toggle switch to the red wire to turn on/off the coil, and a push button to the brown(?) wire to run the starter.
I dont have a wiring diagram, but this should help you figure it out.
Without a key in run position <>How are you going to control the voltage (8v) going to the coil?
The push start button is okay with the ignition key in run.
All you have to do is interrupt the wire that goes to the S terminal with a loop <> from +post of Battery to start button from there to S terminal on starter terminal .
Ok, if you have to do it this will work for all years. I don't have a wiring diagram for a '72 and some of the colors change through the years. On the back of the ignition switch the terminals are lettered A, B, C, S and two with PO. The center one is B and usually a heavy yellow wire. This is your supply power from the battery. A is the accessory power feed, C is the coil feed and S is the starter soleniod feed. The two PO terminals are for the prove-out.
You will need both a simple switch and a push button that is normally off (open). Take the B wire and hook it to one side of a switch. Take the A and C wire and hook it to the other side of the switch. The B wire also has to hook to one side of the button and the S wire hooks to the other side of the button. For the two PO wires, just connect those two together by themselves. That should do it, flip the switch on and push the button.
Well the back of my ignition switch had no markings on it so i ended up drilling it out and jamed an old screw driver in there for the key works great thanks for all the help

If I remember right , the last time i took out my igniton switch, I stuck a straightened paper clip into the little hole on front of switch, and it fell out. Thats also what they did when they stole my truck, then you just turn ignition on with screwdriver.
