LineX. Why?

I was thinking about getting the bed sprayed with LineX but after 5 months, I can't justify why I should. Whenever I get anything out of the bed with a shovel I will need to put a piece of ply wood down first to protect the stuff that is supposed to project the bed. I have moved about 20 cubic yards of dirt since April in the bed of that truck. What a pain that would have been having to always make sure the plywood was covering the linex to protect it. I will always have to be gentle when I throw stuff in the back to project the stuff that is supposed to project the bed. Just doesn't make any sense to me. I had a bed liner in my last truck and it worked very well. I never even once thought about being careful shoveling out dirt or gravel or anything else involving loading or unloading the bed. The last thing I was ever worried about was hurting that thing I had put in to protect the bed. But when I am out with someone who has linexed their truck I am always hearing about being careful not chip, gash, scrape or damage the very stuff that is supposed to be protecting the bed. So what is the point?

This is my second bed that was sprayed, you must be really doing something big to hurt that stuff. Plastic bed liners never made any sense to me...

Line x may or may not make sense. What makes no sense to me is moving 20 yards of gravel with a pickup truck. If it's 20 loads to 20 places that would make sense I guess.

it's cubic yards, not yards, just to be clear.

When I only need a cubic yard or two at a time, 10 or 15 times a year, why would I need something bigger. I certainly don't need a dump truck to move a cubic yard or so of dirt a dozen times a yeaR. Heck, that's true even if its from the same and to the same place every single time.

So what is the point of linex in the bed of my truck if I have to protect it from the mighty shovel?

The linex shop in the area, owned by my bro-in law, recommended against using it on my truck because it just can't handle a shovel.

I remember asking him why he always had that piece of plywood in his bed. He said it was to protect the protector from the shovel.

I have to admit though, it looks good on the body of a truck.

But for the most part, Linex sucks in my opinion, unless you have a show truck or something.

You can take your show pig to the fair in your show truck with the linex coated show bed. Just be sure to put some canvas over the linex to protect it.

I haven't actually damaged any Linex, I was just recommended against using it by the Linex guy, my brother in law.

With a big garden and a fairly large yard, I bring in a cubic yard or two as I need it, many times a year. This always includes a few runs for family and neighbor and its removed from the bed with a shovel.

And yes, two cubic yards of wet top soil all at once, about 4000 lbs, in the bed is a bit much for even a new F-250, about 700 lbs over, but so far its been fine, just slow and easy.

The linex guy said not to do it unless I put down a piece of plywood first because a shovel will chip it and scrape it right off.

As a retired chief mechanical officer for a large fire department; all of the compartments in my Smeal and Pierce fire apparatus as well as the boxes of all of our support and mechanical vehicles were sprayed with Linex since 2000. Some of these vehicles ran 3000 calls a year and are still in service 25 years later. Do we shovel stuff out of them? Not often but the stuff holds up very well!

I really liked the plastic drop in liner that my old '88 had. I could do practically anything short of running a circular saw against it and I wasn't concerned about it's appearance.

However, the spray in liners seem to be what people want these days, I suppose they are more fashionable. My bed is bare right now, I just don't see the need to cover it.

I am little behind on a response since I have had no free time since I got the F-250. :+)

Yeah, a drop in liner does seem to still be the best option for a service truck in most cases, unless you have a show truck. My bed is still bare too and scratched.

That reminds me of all the folks I see around the DFW area with 10k plus lift packages that have 6" or more lift and no where to take it. Plus they never planned on taking the thing off road anyhow, might scratch the linex off the silly bumper needed to hold a 16k lb winch he never planned on using since using the truck as a truck was never part of the plan. Show trucks, eeeh, it takes all kinds I guess.

It looks like the only good time for me to get linex or rhino or whatever would be right before I was ready to sell the truck. And I could say, look at the beautiful bed. If that won't get them to buy it then what else would?
