Coolant Flush

Flushed my coolant system and VC9 does a dang good job. Top row of jugs was the initial drain. 2nd row was 1st drain after adding the VC9 and circulating for 25 miles. As you can see the flushes get cleaner and cleaner. Last drain was basically all Distilled water.

Yep, that's what I've heard. So far so good. I've been keeping an eye on delta t and is staying around 2-3 degrees difference.

And you replaced it with ELC this time?

I went back with Gold. Should I be concerned? Haven't had any problems thus far with the cooling system but that's not to say I wont. I do have coolant filtration which might help with any potential problems. I don't mind draining and refilling again if ELC is the way to go.

I wouldn't have put gold back in it personally. But it should be fine as long as you replace the coolant every 30k. Thing is you can't just drain and refill with Red ELC. You would have to flush it again with distilled water probably at least 6 times. Gold and red can't mix, it is very bad.

I agree, I wouldn't sweat the Gold coolant. It does have a very different additive package than the EC-1 coolants, being you just flushed with chemicals the new coolant is doing its job sticking to the freshly cleaned iron inside your engine. If you swap now the addatives in the EC-1 will be a little late to the party and you'll still need to change coolant on the Gold timetable. I'd also point out using chemicals to clean the cooling system works well but it's important to flush very well to get them completely out. They are very acid or alkaline depending on which one you use and any even a small amount of residue affects the Ph of your new coolant and can lead to more corrosion.

I flushed my 6.0 today and it was filthy. Bought the van used and it was driven 10k in 5 years. More than likely never change.

I am a little hesitant to use a chemical flush untilit comes out clean after the water flush.

Do most folks drain the block? I drained the driver side block and could not insert the 8mm hex into the passenger side drain plug because of the starter. In theory, all the fluid from the block should move throughout the entire system. I am open to suggestions.

What about using Fleetguard Restore? I need to procure some this week.

Thanks

When I flushed mine I drained the drivers side block after every flush. I did not drain the passenger side. I'm hoping that was enough. So far the highest split between oil and coolant temp has been 12 degrees and that was driving 75 - 80 mph down the freeway. It quickly drops when I lower my speed and the split goes down to around 7-8 degrees.

When I flushed mine last week after draining and disposing the coolant 3 times, I ran tap water from the hose with the radiator drain fully open with the engine running on high idle until the water came out clear as it went in. I put a kiddie pool underneath to catch all that water. when the pool was full I would siphon the water into bottles and did this all over again. Then I flushed all the hose water with 16 gallons of distilled water and added Zerex ELC

I have 11 gallons of reverse osmosis and another 7 gallons of distilled for the final flush.
