I have seen this problem a couple of times on this board and have not seen any replies. I have a 2000 Eddie Bauer with the 4.0 V6. This only happens once in a while. When it is started you have to give it gas to keep it running. Shift into drive while giving brake and gas to keep the engine running. Once it warms up it will idle around 750 fairly smoothly.
Today I had to give the engine gas to keep it running in drive while going 20 mph otherwise it would stall while going down the road I let the truck sit for a couple of hours and went out to give it a good kick cause I was mad and it started up just fine.
Any suggestions? Bad o2 sensor? Clogged injectors? I have run about 3 cans of fuel injector cleaner and still does this.

I have the same problem, it's interstate driving or when I use the 4x4. I have a 95 X 4x4 and I travel from Ut to my home in Ohio and back again quite often and for the past few times I have had this problem. I've been suggested everything under the hood, MAS, IAC, TPS, ect. and none of these things have seemed to work for anybody else except replacing the MAS. People who have just cleaned it have not resolved this problem. So my suggestion to those of you who have not done this, is to try it. I am going to do it myself here next pay day. Please if you have done this and it has not worked for you, LET US KNOW. If you have done this and it worked, also LET US KNOW. It is the only thing that I have heard works for this particular problem. I love Fords and have owned 3 (97 Lariat F150, 97 Expedition XLT 4x4 and 95 Explorer XLT 4x4) and the Explorer I found suits my needs perfectly except for this glitch. I hope someone knows how to fix this issue. To many of us are having problems with this.
I had a similar problem - does your engine make humming sounds, or stall more than usual when your A/C is on? Ford had a recall on their Inlet Air Control Valve. My dealer had no idea what my problem was, and offered to take a look at it in exchange for about $500. But my family mechanic knew what it was just from listening to the engine. $100 or less, five minute installation. The only reason I can think of so far.
i have a 97 explorer AWD V8 5.0. Mine dies sometimes too like u start the thing and it just cuts off. yes i have had the injectors cleaned but it still happens. it only happens when it sits for a while tho.
to all that replied thanks but did finally resolve by first cleaning aic - air idle control- by doing this noticed a change when starting explorer i got elevated idles just like it would do when new a defenent change buttt still didn,t seem right.warm so finally spent 100.$$for new from napa it really runs good warm or cold aic was my solution
This is the case....
200 Explorer 4wd.... under extended warranty... Automatic..
V6. 4.0 SOHC
Engine starts fine... no problems there... but as soon as I release the gas to press the brake for shifting, the engine dies.
When I turn the switch to the 'on' position, I can hear the fuel pump.
I will try the IAC (inlet air control) and post results,, but if anybody else runs into this situation with another solution, help will be appreciated.
