I have a 2002 Explorer XLT with 31K miles. The "Service engine soon" light just turned on and stayed on. I looked in the owner's manual, checked the gas cap but alas it is still on. What other things should I check and does it require a trip to the dealer to have the light turned off?
Your 02 sensors can tip it off along with the gas cap but before going to the dealership to have it checked, disconnect your battery stand on your brakes for a count of ten, reconnect battery ( you'll have to reprogram your radio and clock) this will turn off your check engine light. Sometimes (toyota for sure) manufacturers will preprogram the check engine light to come on at 30k and 60k to prompt you to service it on time, give or take a few thousand miles. If it comes back on then you know you have something wrong and will need to have it diagnosed, usually comes back on within 4-5 minutes. Hope this helps!
