2002 Ranger Trans Problem
How many miles on this puppy?
Have you checked the tranny fluid level & condition of the fluid????
Has the tranny fluid ever been changed?
Is the noise coming from the tranny, or the engine?
Have you had the tranny computer/controller scanned for trouble codes? If so, post All trouble code clue Numbers. If it hasn't been scanned, maybe consider having a trusted local tranny shop use their upscale scantool but they'll likely charge for the scan, or since your a youngster that's likely comfortable with computer technology & probably like learning to turn your own wrenches, maybe consider coming by the inexpensive ELM scantool running FORScan software, or the like, to the viewing device of your choice as discussed here https://www.ford-trucks.com]/forums/...-scantool.html & have it take a look at all of the vehicle computer/controllers & post up All trouble code clue Numbers found, & proceed with your trouble shoot from there.
Since this is an early model OHC Ranger 4.0L, do you know if its had the cam timing chain tensioner cassettes changed, as they were known to become worn, let the chain get loose & noisy & it was said to sound sorta like marble noise, a metallic click/clacking that would be high up from around where the cam chains run in front or the rear of the engine.
If they've been changed under warranty, it'll have a repair record stored in Fords Oasis system that a Dealer can access using the vehicle VIN#. If it hasn't been worked on & you come to suspect that's the noise problem, have a trusted Ford Dealer determine if its VIN# is still under the no cost replacement warranty program.
Some thoughts for consideration, with more clues, the forum can likely be more specific on where best to look, or what best to do, next.
